Michael Dean's web site is quite overwhelming. If a web site
is how the gawking public gains access to artist/craftspeople then that site
must offer more than merely goods and services. It has to extend the persona
to the extent that a visit to the site is like a visit to the artist's head.
As such, it will reek of disingenuity and posturing if it doesn't periodically
reveal some warts and scars. People who complain about your "indulgence" should
consider how they are being "indulged" by others. Mainstream artists who are going online because a marketing
flak told them to are only capable of reproducing the same corporate facade
that already taints their work. Independent artists might consider avoiding
emulating the accepted standards as a first step to finding their unique
voice and an audience that is capable of hearing it. I think we will learn
much about ourselves as we wrestle with what we are and aren't comfortable
posting for others to gawk at.
